Information |
This painting by Raymond S. Pease was copied from an original portrait by Copley for the Bennington Museum in 1941. The Museum had only opened 13 years before and early curators were eager to collect portraits of as many famous people connected to Bennington as possible. When original paintings were not available, they hired local artists to make copies for the collection. Molly Stark (1737-1814), was the wife of General John Stark, who led the NH troops at the Battle of Bennington. He made her famous with his rallying cry before the Battle of Bennington, "There are your enemies, the Red Coats and the Tories. They are ours, or this night Molly Stark sleeps a widow!" Today her name is honored in Vermont with a state park, highway, mountain, and one of Bennington’s own elementary schools. |
