Information |
Enlightenment thinking and religious faith went hand-in-hand during the early nineteenth century in rural New England. The Bible and other religious texts were far and away the most common books in American homes during the early 1800s. Isaac Eddy's first major commission as a print maker was a suite of seven engravings for the first Bible printed in Vermont. In 1810, to drum up excitement for their project, the publishers advertised that it would be created "in a style of decency and elegance… so every Family, in this state, will feel an ambition to be furnished with the first Bible printed in Vermont." |
