Administrative/Biographical History |
Hall Park McCullough was born into the prestigious North Bennington McCullough family in 1872. The son of Governor John G. and Eliza Hall Park McCullough, he married Edith van Benthuysen in North Bennington in 1901. McCullough divided his life between law, collecting and his family. He died in North Bennington, Vermont, August 5, 1966 at the age of ninety-four. Very civic minded, McCullough served on several boards, including the Bennington Museum, and was one of the museum's most significant benefactors of the twentieth century. When the museum opened in 1928 McCullough loaned many of his important pieces relating to early Bennington history and worked closely with the museum's director/curator to purchase pieces the museum was interested in as they became available. These objects were all given to the museum upon his death. An avid collector with a wide range of interests, he is described by Kevin Graffagnino as "guided by a scholarly impulse that made him an authority in whatever category he collected. Dealers knew him for his characteristically methodical, patient and deliberate approach." His personal collection ranged from ancient coins to contemporary manuscripts, maps, books, paintings, drawings and engravings. |
