DARLING, Charles Hial: Lawyer and collector of customs; born in Woodstock, Windsor Co., Vt., May 9, 1859; son of Jason L. Darling and Ellen L. (Paul) Darling. He was educated in Perkins Academy, Woodstock, Vt., at the Montpellier Seminary at Montpelier, Vt. and at Tufts College as A.B. in 1884, and he received the degree of L.L.D. in 1903. He was admitted to the bar in 1886, and he is now partner in the firm of Darling and Mower, attorney at Burlington, Vt. He was judge of the Municipal Court of Bennington, 1887-1901, and he represented the town of Bennington in the Legislature of Vermont, 1896-1898. He was a member of the Judicial Committee of the body; assistant secretary of the Navy, 1901-1905; and was appointed in 1905 collector of customs for the District of Vermont. He was a member and was president,1899-1900 of the Vermont Bar Association; was a member of the Vermont Historical Society. Judge Darling was a prominent member of the college fraternity Zeta Psi, and was president of the National Association, 1904-1905. He was also a member of the Masonic order and grand lecturer thereof and a member and president of the Vermont Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a trustee of Tufts College and president of the Board of Trustees of Goddard Seminary. He was married in Bennington, Vermont on 06 Oct., 1880 to Agnes Christmas Norton and they had three children. Taken from Men and Women of America, 1910 |
