Notes |
George Godfrey served as a private in the Revolutionary War (his father, George Godfrey Sr., was a Brigadier General) and applied for a pension in 1818, claiming that sickness had left him infirm and unable to do his regular work as a farmer. At the time he was 60 years old. His wife Abigail was a year younger, and also had health problems. In 1820, they were also supporting their widowed daughter Malinda Whitney and her two small children ages 4 and 2, and their youngest son, who was 14. When George died in 1830, his wife applied for a widow's pension. Each of these applications involved a humiliating series of documentations proving that the applicant could not support themselves, and had in fact served in the Revolution or been married to a Revolutionary veteran prior to their service. Abigail continued to collect her pension until her death in 1846. They are both buried in the Bennington Village Cemetery. Their son James had died in 1805 while working on a whaling ship. |
