Silas Hodges was born in Norton,Massachusetts where his family lived for about 200 years. He practiced medicine in Woodstock, Connecticut and Dunbarton, New Hampshire before joining the Continental Army and serving as a surgeon with Washington. He settled in Clarendon about 1783 "on the intervale of Otter Creek." He then began to purchase numerous tracts of land in Addison, Chittenden, Rutland and Franklin counties, many through tax sales from original proprietors. He eventually gave up medicine and focused on his mercantile business and land interests. |
