Moved to California in 1852 and went into the mines. Soon entered into trade but no place for his previous position as a paper manufacturer so he became a printer. Member of the San Francisco Vigilance Commitee of 1856. Returned from California in 1856 to purchase the Hinsdillville farm originally settled by his ancestor. Following the Civil War he was a superintendent of docks in Panama while Trenor W. Park was the President of the Panama Railroad Company. Colonel James H. Walbridge, 2nd Vermont Regiment. He was captain of Company A, 2nd Vermont Regiment, which was the first company raised in Bennington for the defense of the Union, and the first in Vermont for the three- year enlistment period. It was mustered into service June 20, 1861. Captain Walbridge was raised to rank of major in 1862, Lieutenant-Colonel and Colonel in 1863. |
