Notes |
After graduating from Yale, Noah Smith moved to Vermont and became one of the first two men admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1779 when Vermont was still an independent republic. He was a Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court from 1789 to 1791 and 1798 to 1801. When Vermont joined the United States, Smith became the state’s first federal collector of customs. He was also one of the founders of Masonry in Bennington and appointed the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Vermont in 1794. He was one of the first white settlers of Milton, Vermont, but eventually his luck ran out. In 1810 he was jailed for debt, and was detained until shortly before his death, when the state legislature passed a bill for his relief. |
