Details |
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the United States armed forces who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Springfield, Illinois, and grew to include hundreds of posts (local community units) across the nation. The Custer Post was founded in Bennington in 1877. About the year 1884 there was a dissension in the Custer Post and a group of members led by Cyrus Gibson formed an additional post which was known as the Sixth Corp Post; however, they re-united about 1905. |
