Chittenden moved to Williston, Vermont in 1774.He was a farmer who took an active role in politics, particuarly the contest between the New York and New Hampshire land grants and was a member of the Convention of Delegates which declared Vermont an independent state in 1777. He was a resident of Arlington during the Revolution and from 1779-1787. During the Vermont Republic Chittenden served as governor from 1778–1789 and 1790–1791. After Vermont entered the Union in 1791 as the fourteenth state, Chittenden continued to serve as governor until 1797 when he died in office. Citing Vermont's tumultuous founding, his epitaph reads "Out of storm and manifold perils rose an enduring state, the home of freedom and unity." Chittenden married Elizabeth Meigs, also of East Guilford, Conn., on the 4th of October, 1749. They had four sons and six daughters, all of whom survived to adulthood. |
