Dewey was a key figure in the early history of Bennington. He served as a Captain of the Bennington militia at the Revolutionary War battles of Ticonderoga, Bennington, and Saratoga. Dewey's Inn was the site of many political meetings, including a visit by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in 1791. |
